SEO Consultants – the good, the bad, and the ugly
There are a lot of different things that you need to take into consideration when you’re evaluating potential SEO consultants. The truth is, most people don’t really have a clear sense in their mind of what SEO consultants should be doing on a daily basis and what kinds of goals and metrics should be used to measure performance. Let’s talk about what you should think about prior to retaining the services of any SEO specialist.
The very first thing you need to realise is that SEO consultants cannot promise you a number one ranking in any search engine overnight (well actually they can promise you a number 1 ranking, but they cannot guarantee it). Organic search engine optimisation is a process that takes time. It’s worth taking the time because highly qualified SEO consultants who are able to provide your website with top search engine ranking exposure can ultimately give you more website traffic than you’ll know what to do with.
SEO consultants that set realistic expectations
Sadly, as just mentioned, many unscrupulous SEO consultants will make wild promises that are simply unrealistic. Not only does this create a very poor set of expectations in the mind of you the customer, but it also really tarnishes the entire SEO industry as it leads other SEO professionals to also make these outlandish claims in an effort to win and retain clients.
Good SEO consultants prefer to take a very conservative approach. When they meet with prospective clients, it’s important that the client comes away from the meeting with a realistic understanding of the search engine optimisation process. Now, we are not suggesting that they know all the in’s and out’s of the SEO strategies in use today – because let’s face it, if they did why would they require the services of any SEO consultant or SEO company? What we mean here is that they have a basic understanding of what the search engine optimisation process is and particularly how it can benefit them and their business. In our opinion, this is something that not enough SEO consultants take the time to explain to their clients. As a result, people are left with the impression that SEO professionals can somehow magically wave a wand and get a website to the very top of any search engine in a matter of hours or days.
We as people generally don’t like hearing that something can’t be done. More often than not, we enjoy dreaming that our companies can do extremely well in the search engines without our having to really do much work or spend any money. The simple fact of the matter is that there are lots of SEO consultants who mislead customers into believing that search engine optimisation will just happen and be successful if they are taken on. Again, these are unrealistic expectations in the majority of cases. Building an online presence takes time – but rest assured the results can be spectacular.
Good SEO consultants tend not to spend a lot of time focusing on how you choose to run your business, but rather will offer pointers or make suggestions based on what their experience has taught them works on the web and that which doesn’t. As a client you should be looking for someone who is very open and honest in expressing thoughts and comments that they believe, as SEO consultants, you need to know about.
SEO consultants – pricing structure
Pricing and fees is yet another topic that a lot of SEO consultants can sometimes make more confusing than needs to be. What you need to focus on is the fact that the right SEO consultants can help you move your website into more prominent positions of the search engines – i.e. those positions, such as a page 1 ranking in Google, that attract additional traffic to your site, leading to more sales and profit for your business. The amount of money charged for SEO services, in the majority of cases (assuming you are using good SEO consultants of course) pale into insignificance when compared to the money that you have the opportunity to make online.
SEO consultants that get to know your business
Only the very best SEO consultants will take the time to understand you, your business, and what you believe your needs are when it comes to search engine optimisation and better online visibility. This process should be taken very seriously, and we think it creates a solid foundation upon which to build a good working relationship that is mutually beneficial to both you and the seo consultants.
